What a view should cost you on Google Ads when you promote music

Cost-per-view ranges for music video in Latin America and Spain, how to compute yours, and seven adjustments that lower it without losing audience.

Almost nobody promoting music knows what they pay per view. Google Ads shows spend and YouTube shows views, but nobody puts the two numbers together. Without that number you cannot decide whether a campaign works.

How to compute it

Cost per paid view = campaign spend divided by views from the "Advertising" source in YouTube Analytics, over the same period. Use the views YouTube reports, not the ones Google Ads reports, because those are the ones that count for the channel.

Second number: cost per paid watch hour. Divide spend by watch hours from that same source. This one punishes campaigns that bring views that leave.

Market ranges

For music video with skippable in-stream and in-feed ads in Latin America and Spain, typical 2026 ranges run from $0.01 to $0.03 per view. Below $0.01 there is usually very broad targeting with low retention; above $0.04 it is worth reviewing format and countries.

These are references, not a target. A campaign at $0.03 with retention equal to organic is worth more than one at $0.01 with half the retention.

Seven adjustments that lower the cost

In order of impact, based on what we see in music campaigns:

  • Target by retention: focus budget on countries where average duration beats the global figure.
  • Custom affinity audiences built from similar artists, instead of country and age alone.
  • Remarketing to channel viewers and subscribers for the second push.
  • Test in-feed against in-stream and keep the one that retains better, not the cheapest.
  • Lower the max CPV bid 10% a week while view rate holds above 30%.
  • Exclude mobile app placements and children's content.
  • Cap frequency at two or three impressions per user per week.

When to stop

If after two weeks paid retention is still under 50% of organic, the problem is not the bid: it is the video or the audience. Change the first five seconds or the audience before spending another dollar.
